I recently gave a few Roundhouse Provisions products a thorough tryout and I’m happy to share the results with you now. I’ve tried a number of different brand emergency meal products in the past, some of which I found to be satisfactory and others, hmm, not so much. I have to say that I found Roundhouse Provisions to be some of the best I’ve tried, with a couple of qualifiers, which I’ll get into below. The kit bundle I tried was the Ultimate Campout Kit, which included a 3 Day Emergency Meal Kit with three meal packets, Survival Mode Emergency Ration Bars, a canister of Hydration Punch, and Morning Kick travel packets.
I’m not sure exactly how many days this bundle is designed to support, but the 3 Day Meal Kit is said to be a one-person kit. I found the three meals to supply considerably more nutrition and stomach-filling food than three days worth; I’d say five to even six days without too much trouble, if your energy expenditure is minimal. Supplementing those meals with the six Emergency Ration Bars and the hydration drink mixes and you’ve got enough nutritious foods to last, in my estimation, a week or maybe more. This is important, because if you’re amassing food provisions for camping or future emergency situations you also want to get as much value for your money as you can.
First, let’s look at the 3 Day Emergency Meal Kit. My wife and I both enjoyed the three meal packets - Oatmeal With Brown Sugar, Cheesy Broccoli Rice, and Creamy Chicken-Flavored Rice - that are included in the larger ziplock bag. We especially enjoyed the Cheesy Broccoli Rice and Creamy Chicken Rice. All of these meals were exceedingly easy to prepare; just add to boiling water. The two rice-based meals were tasty and satisfying and, frankly, could be stretched to last longer or provide additional meals by adding more water than the suggested directions advised, without sacrificing taste or edibility. Each packet supplied both my wife and I with more than one meal, and the second day was just as good as the first. The Oatmeal With Brown Sugar meal was also pretty good. My wife thought it tasted just as good as regular stovetop oatmeal and brown sugar. I was a little more ambivalent about it, although I found it still flavorful, just not as tasty as the stovetop variety.
Each of these meals could of course be supplemented with additional ingredients to stretch them either further or provide more flavor and nutrition. Raisins or fruit could be added to the oatmeal packet, chicken pieces added to the creamy chicken, vegetables or larger broccoli pieces to the cheesy broccoli. They are great on their own, but also provide a strong foundation for nutritional and flavor variety with minimal effort. This 3 Day Emergency Meal Kit has a 25-year shelf life, which is fantastic and should cover just about any emergency situation you might find yourself in. I’d happily include several of these packets in my long-term survival kit. They provide plenty of variety, taste good, are super easy to prepare, and are nutritionally sound. Thumbs up!
